Day one diary
Today we hike to the other side of the mountain to make shelter. Thomas and Oliver have gone off to find equipment whilst Caitlin, jessie and I start setting up a suitabhle hut to stay in.
The boys come back with large sticks and thick leaves, they then go away for food. Us girls have made a hut from branches bark leaves flax and vines. we have made it as cosy as possible, seeing as we don't know how long we will be there.
Thomas and Oliver are back dragging a sheep with them. They quickly explain that we can cook the sheep and use the wool for warmth.
we've made a fire and are now eating sheep. Caitlin and I have plucked the sheeps' fur and made blankets.
we are all pretty tired by now so we all head into the hut and go to sleep.

Kakepuku

This little volcano is Mount Kakepuku,a tiny cone, less than 500 metres high.Kakepuku rises from the Waipa River plain, not far from the town of Te Awamutu. It is largely covered in native broadleaf forest, predominated by Tawa,Pukatea, and Mahoe or Whiteywood. It is home to several species of native birds, including the North Island Robin, and recently,Hochstetters frog,a small native tree frog, has been found in the reserve.
This photo is taken from the Te Rauamoa reserve,on the southern flanks of Mt Pirongia.
Behind Kakepuku, and to its right, you can see the shape of another volcano,Maungatautiri.
